Isartor

Isartor is Munich’s surviving main city gate, rising between the Altstadt and the districts beyond. Its original main tower dates from 1337 and once guarded the eastern entrance to the salt road from Salzburg towards Switzerland. The tall tower and adjoining structures still show how trade and travel passed through this threshold.

Friedrich von Gärtner restored the gate about five centuries later, giving it a new architectural face. Severe Second World War damage led to extensive renovations in the 1970s, preserving the medieval core for today. The towers house the Valentin Karlstadt Musäum, which opened in 1959 and explores the comic duo’s world, while exhibitions, concerts and seasonal events bring activity to the historic setting.

Look towards the Tal and watch the clock: its hands move anticlockwise.
