Gärtnerplatz
Gärtnerplatz is a historic circular square in Munich’s Isarvorstadt, established around 1860 as the district’s central point. Max Kolb designed the space to honour architect Friedrich von Gärtner. Today, the square forms the heart of the Gärtnerplatzviertel, a lively neighbourhood with cafés, restaurants and small boutiques.
Altrosa façades surround the square, with their old-rose colour restored during the 1970s. The central Staatstheater am Gärtnerplatz opened in 1865 and continues to present operettas and musicals. Colourful flower beds and a fountain give the setting a clear centre for gatherings. Summer brings locals and visitors together for picnics, leisure and neighbourhood life.
The square’s popularity has also prompted discussions about noise and litter since the early 2000s. Its most memorable view combines the circular layout, the fountain and the restored old-rose buildings.
