Feuerwache 1 - Hauptfeuerwache

Feuerwache 1 - Hauptfeuerwache stands at Munich's Old Town edge, in the Angerviertel district, as a historic fire station and architectural landmark. Its four storeys rise above an arcaded ground floor supported by Tuscan columns. The Neorenaissance façade remains restrained below, then adds three-arched loggias and dormer windows beneath gabled roofs. Round-arched gateways frame the fire-engine entrances.

Construction ran from 1902 to 1904, replacing a smaller station that could no longer serve Munich's growth. Carl Hocheder designed it under Robert Rehlen's direction. The building's arcades combine a working entrance with a formal rhythm across the lower façade. Horse-drawn engines once depended on trained horses and an innovative harnessing system. That arrangement brought the horses to their vehicles in under a minute during the station's earlier service. Inside, massive columns support cross vaults in the three-aisled main hall.

The Munich Fire Brigade Museum opened here in 1979 and presents Munich's firefighting history. An oval staircase receives daylight through a roof lantern.
