Ehemaliges Brausebad
On a large traffic island at Bavariaring 5 in Munich, Ehemaliges Brausebad stands near the Oktoberfest grounds’ main entrance. Its octagonal form presents a prominent portico. Built in 1894, the public shower bath served rapidly growing working-class districts where many homes lacked private bathrooms.
Munich architect Hans Grässel designed the structure in a historicist style influenced by Palladianism. Symmetry and classical elements shape its formal exterior. Shower cells once circled a central heating unit. The practical arrangement placed everyday hygiene at the centre of the interior.
After the shower bath closed, the building became a public toilet and briefly sheltered tram conductors. Renovation in 2018 created the restaurant Das Bad. The former traffic-island facility therefore carries both civic and architectural history. Its circular interior plan remains the detail that best reveals its original purpose.
