Verformung 14, 17-1
Verformung 14, 17-1 stands in front of the former Aukloster building in Germany’s historic quarter. This dark steel sculpture contrasts with the surrounding lighter stone walls. Heavy elements bend and press into a compact geometric form with sharp edges. Smooth planes reveal the force used to shape the metal.
Alf Lechner created the work in 1970 for the exhibition Umwelt Akzente. He formed massive steel plates into clear, restrained shapes. The surfaces preserve visible traces of this industrial process, where pressure and bending determine every angle. Lechner first worked as a draftsman and industrial designer before becoming known for large steel works in public spaces.
Today, the sculpture meets an open setting where visitors pass through the historic quarter. A nearby river adds sound to the quiet space around the metal. The accessible location lets you examine how the dark mass stands against the pale stone.
