Jules Massenet

The Jules Massenet bust stands inside the Opéra de Monte-Carlo in Monaco, among the venue’s artworks. Léopold Bernhard Bernstamm carved the marble sculpture with finely defined facial features and a distinctive expression.

The bust commemorates Jules Massenet, a French composer who lived during the nineteenth century. He wrote more than twenty-five operas and helped shape French musical traditions. Many of his compositions continue to be performed in the opera house, linking the sculpture with Monaco’s musical life. Other artworks nearby create a setting where visual art and opera meet.

The marble gives the portrait a classical presence as you move through the historic theatre. Its detailed face offers a tangible impression of the composer’s character.
