Riedboden

Riedboden is a nature reserve south of Mittenwald, in Bavaria’s Garmisch-Partenkirchen district. It covers about 146 hectares beside the Isar, near Austria. After the Scharnitz Pass, the valley widens into flat river plains, meadows, forests, and open farmland. The turquoise-green Isar shapes the riverside view through the reserve.

Protected since 1982, the reserve preserves flora and wildlife associated with the upper Isar valley. The reserve’s trails cross mostly flat ground. Several walking loops cross the Isar and return through fields, with routes reaching about nine kilometres. Their elevation changes stay near 50 to 90 metres. In winter, three cross-country circuits cover roughly three, six, or eight kilometres beside the river. The circuits suit both classic and skating techniques.

A large playground stands at the entrance, adding a clear family feature to the protected landscape. The Isar riverbed also provides habitat for wildlife. From the trail network, winter tracks follow the Isar towards Scharnitz in Tyrol.
