Geigenbau-Museum
The Geigenbau-Museum stands in central Mittenwald, where violin making has shaped local life since 1685. Matthias Klotz established a lute and violin workshop here. Founded in 1930, the collection has occupied a heritage-listed historic building since 1960.
Two themes connect Mittenwald’s history with violin making across more than three centuries. About two hundred string instruments span Baroque examples, nineteenth- and twentieth-century violins, and children’s models. Guitars, zithers, citterns, and double basses broaden the display beyond violins.
Maps, images, and ethnographic objects place the craft within Mittenwald and the Upper Isar Valley. A reconstructed workshop shows traditional making, while a show workshop reveals techniques and materials. Historical films, violin sounds, varnish ingredients, and textured wood engage more than sight.
