Vigna di Leonardo
Vigna di Leonardo lies near Santa Maria delle Grazie in Milan, occupying a historic vineyard setting beyond Porta Vercellina. Leonardo received it from Ludovico il Moro in 1498. The roughly one-hectare plot formed part of San Vittore’s great vineyard, beyond Milan’s Porta Vercellina district. Santa Maria delle Grazie provides a nearby landmark.
Before leaving Milan during the French invasion in 1500, Leonardo rented the vineyard to Sir Pietro di Giovanni da Oppreno. Leonardo later secured its return through persistent efforts. He remembered the land in his final will, dividing it between his loyal servant and pupil Salai.
Architect Luca Beltrami rediscovered its location through historical documents. A scientific project revived the vineyard for Expo 2015, replanting Malvasia di Candia Aromatica, the original grape variety. Malvasia di Candia Aromatica was the variety replanted there.
