Piazza della Scala
Piazza della Scala stands at the centre of Milan, linking Piazza del Duomo through the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II. Teatro alla Scala faces the open space with its grand façade. Palazzo Marino, completed in 1563, rises beside the square and has housed Milan’s city hall since 1861. The surrounding architecture also includes the Palazzo della Banca Commerciale Italiana, designed by Luca Beltrami between 1907 and 1911.
The square took shape in 1858 after several buildings, including Caffè Martini, were demolished. Beltrami later shaped its urban design, lighting and other architectural details. Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II extends from here towards Piazza del Duomo, with construction spanning 1865 to 1877. Casino Ricordi, built in the early 1830s, adds another historic building to the setting.
A statue of Leonardo da Vinci by Pietro Magni stands among the square’s landmarks. Magni’s monument was unveiled in 1872, while Luigi Secchi’s Monument to Giulio Ricordi arrived in 2016. Together, Teatro alla Scala, Palazzo Marino and the monuments create a compact view of Milan’s architectural history.

The myTuur app is free, and once you are standing at a spot its story starts by itself.
Spots like this one are the stops myTuur strings into tours through Milan. In the app, each story begins where you stand: walk up to a spot and it starts, read it on screen or listen as you go, then follow the route to the next one.
What is myTuur?
