Casa Manzoni
Casa Manzoni stands on Via Gerolamo Morone in the heart of Milan as a historic house museum dedicated to Alessandro Manzoni. Its rooms connect Italian literary history with the home where Manzoni lived, worked and received visitors. The Neo-Renaissance façade presents elaborate terracotta ornaments inspired by Lombard Renaissance architecture. A prominent portal and balcony give the street-facing exterior its clearest visual features.
Manzoni purchased the house in October 1813 from Alberico De Felber for 106,000 lire. In 1864, architect Andrea Boni reshaped the building and created the appearance visible today. Manzoni’s heirs sold the property after his death in 1873, and later owners preserved selected rooms for public visits. The City of Milan received the house as a gift from the Savings Bank of the Province of Lombardy in 1937.
Restoration began in the early 1940s and returned the interiors to their condition during Manzoni’s lifetime. War interrupted the work, which resumed and finished in the early 1960s. The museum opened in 1965 with Manzoni’s study and bedroom among its restored interiors. The ground floor also once hosted the Lombard Historical Society and meetings of the Reconciler club.
