Casa Buttafava

Casa Buttafava stands on Via Lanzone 21 in Milan as a historic residential building shaped by several architectural periods. Its origins reach back to the sixteenth century. Later neoclassical remodelling introduced measured symmetry while preserving the building’s character as a private home. The portal gives the façade its clearest focus.

A rounded arch with a slight splayed opening rises between pilasters and diamond-shaped stones beneath a strong moulding. The windows keep their lines simple. Their restrained frames carry modest scroll details, creating an austere contrast with the decorative ambitions associated with baroque architecture. Two balconies mark the piano nobile above.

Added during the neoclassical period, they bring a balanced horizontal rhythm to the principal floor of the house. Casa Buttafava remains a private residence, retaining its historical residential use. The building stands near the Basilica of Sant’Ambrogio, within a historic part of Milan.
