Schloss Winkel

Schloss Winkel stands in Obermais, Meran, among the gardens and greenery that distinguish this part of South Tyrol. The Renaissance castle grew from a farmstead first mentioned in the fourteenth century. Its square Baroque staircase tower rises above the main building with a dome, lantern, and copper sheeting. Outbuildings surround a large cobbled courtyard, while a ring wall encloses the complex with gates on every side.

The estate expanded particularly during the seventeenth century, when Claudia de’ Medici held it briefly. In the early nineteenth century, wine merchant Urban Pitsch added a chapel, garden, guest house, and large livestock barn. His work connected the property with Meran’s growth as a spa town, including its parks and walking paths. Renovations followed in 1808, 1935, and the mid-twentieth century, although the castle, barn, economic building, and Baroque garden now need major restoration.

The buildings remain privately owned and closed to interior visits, but nearby streets reveal the architecture and grounds. A local legend gives the place an unsettling detail: a servant’s pitch-treated scythe cut through an iron rod, then showed unexplained blood on its blade. The estate also occasionally hosts open-air theatre, adding performances to its long connection with Meran’s landscape.
