Riviera Palace
Riviera Palace stands on Menton’s Annonciade hill as a former grand hotel shaped by Belle Époque architecture. Swiss hotelier Joseph-Arthème Widmer acquired the site, and Abel Glena and Alfred-Auguste Marsang designed the building.
The original structure later gained additional floors, two towers, and a west wing. Balconies and loggias mark its palace character. Turquoise Saïssi ceramics and a mural frieze by Guillaume Cerutti-Maori bring detail to the façade. The frieze presents scenes from different countries.
The former grounds included staff housing, a cooks’ house, laundry facilities, water tanks, and a performance hall. The former hotel later became private apartments. Its remaining garden contains a mature Banksia rose and a Montevideo guava tree among exotic plants.
Historical protection covers its principal interiors. The protected spaces include the entrance hall, grand salon, marble staircase, and music room. Protection also covers the façades, roofs, and garden. Riviera Palace preserves Menton’s architectural and social history through its ornamental details and changing uses.
