Queen Victoria

Queen Victoria marks Menton’s connection with the British monarch through Chalet des Rosiers and Victoria Square. Both landmarks stand in Garavan, near Mediterranean views and the Italian border.

The historic chalet combines Victorian architecture with Mediterranean character, showing turrets, elaborate balustrades, carved wood, a sloping roof, and a rose-decorated balcony. A marble plaque at the entrance records Queen Victoria’s stay there. The residence preserves historic details despite renovated interiors, while views reach from Garavan’s old town towards the Italian border. Queen Victoria painted watercolours of those views.

Victoria Square presents a commemorative monument with white marble sculpture, a bronze cartouche, a basin, and water jets. The monument portrays the queen and recalls her connection with Menton. Garavan adds quiet lanes, markets, pebble beaches, Mediterranean scenery, Alpine mountain views, and French and Italian cultural influences. This spot shows how Queen Victoria’s visits helped associate Menton with royal travel and a climate valued for health.
