Hôtel Pretti

Hôtel Pretti stands on rue Longue in Menton, a historic townhouse built for the Pretti family. Construction dates to 1533, according to the building’s recorded history. The present structure reflects a seventeenth-century remodelling and presents three storeys in the Genoese Baroque style. Its façade has a solid, restrained appearance. An inscription dated 1649 quotes the Magnificat in Latin and remains visible on the façade. A monumental staircase remains inside the townhouse. An earthquake destroyed the original Baroque interiors, which later received decoration inspired by ancient Pompeii.

The house also has two historical names. These are Hôtel Pretti de Saint-Ambroise and Hôtel Galleani de Saint-Ambroise. Barthélemy Pretti once displayed a Turkish lance from Lepanto in the vestibule, connecting the residence with wider European history. Two Menton galleys took part in that naval battle. Private ownership means visitors see the building from outside. Since 1989, the Hôtel Pretti has held historic-monument protection and faces the Saint Michel ramp. Its façade remains the building’s visible link to Menton’s architectural heritage. The Hôtel Pretti records the city’s noble, architectural and political history through its names, stonework and surviving inscription.
