Chapelle Saint-Jacques
Chapelle Saint-Jacques stands in Menton, France, near the old port of Garavan and the French-Italian border. Its elegant façade and simple lines show the restrained Baroque style of an early nineteenth-century rebuilding.
Construction began in 1688, when the building served as an oratory for travellers and pilgrims. The chapel stood beside the Roman Via Aurelia, a coastal route linking journeys towards Santiago de Compostela and Rome. Later, it became a funeral chapel for the Bertrand family, followed by the Pretti de Sainte-Marie family. After religious use ended, the interior became a venue for temporary art exhibitions during the twentieth century.
Historic-monument protection has recognised its heritage since 1948. A 2010 commemorative plaque marks the site as a pilgrim stop on the GR 653A towards Santiago de Compostela. Nearby Chapelle Sainte-Anne and Chapelle Saint-Julien l’Hospitalier connect it with a wider network of pilgrimage landmarks. From here, routes could follow the seaside or cross Menton’s old town before meeting traces of the ancient Roman road.
