Westertor
Westertor stands on Memmingen’s western old-town edge, between the Kerkerturm and the Lindauer Tor. Its stone passage marks a former entrance within the historic city fortifications. The defensive system began in the twelfth century and eventually included twenty-eight gates and towers across roughly three kilometres.
An old wall route covers about one and a half kilometres before reaching the gate, depending on your starting point. Imperial troops damaged the structure during the Thirty Years’ War, shaping the appearance you see now. A former gabled roof disappeared, and an octagonal hooded roof replaced it during the sixteenth century. The present form dates from sixteen sixty.
Small shield-shaped plaques show the imperial eagle and Memmingen’s double city arms on both sides. Wheelchair access makes this architectural landmark easier to experience alongside the western old-town wall.
