Bismarckturm Memmingen
Bismarckturm Memmingen rises on the Hühnerberg in Memmingen, Bavaria, as an eighteen-metre historical tower. Built in 1904, it began as an observation tower designed by city architect Peter Lang. An annex and battlements give the structure its distinctive outline.
The local beautification association commissioned the tower before admirers of Otto von Bismarck dedicated it to him. A stone coat of arms by Georg Pöppel and a relief by Gustav Adolf Daumiller were then added. Removable fire baskets once illuminated the tower, while colourful decorations cost eleven hundred marks.
Renovation in 2000 refreshed the white paint, but the entrance now stands bricked up. The vanished motto “IN TRINITATE ROBUR” once appeared beneath the coat of arms. Inscriptions below the viewing platform include “WE GERMANS FEAR GOD, NOTHING ELSE IN THE WORLD.” A later fire damaged the interior, with the loss estimated at five thousand euros.
