WALTER GERSON
The Walter Gerson Stolperstein lies in the pavement at Posthusplatsen, beside the water where the old customs house once stood. Its brass surface catches light between the cobbles.
The small square commemorates Walter Gerson, born in Danzig and trained as a lawyer. He sought safety with his wife Martha Schapira and their two children. In June 1939, he reached this shore but was refused entry. The family continued to Rabka Zdrój as German forces invaded Poland.
Walter, his son and his brother-in-law were shot in Mszana Dolna on 12 September 1939. Martha was murdered in Rabka Zdrój in 1942, while their daughter escaped to Palestine. Artist Gunter Demnig installed the stone, and three local schools adopted the memorial. Reading its short inscription means looking down at a brass square and confronting the fate of a family beside the water.
