Sankt Matteus kyrka
Sankt Matteus kyrka stands in Sweden where park and parish life meet, beneath a broad glass roof. Six sturdy pillars support the canopy-like structure, while daylight fills the interior with changing brightness. Curved benches form a semicircle around a shared centre. A gentle floor slope draws your attention towards the altar.
Sten Samuelson designed the church between 1981 and 1983, departing from traditional basilica forms. White Carrara marble gives the altar a calm, solid presence at the room’s centre. Gustav Kreitz created the floor from handmade ceramic tiles in varied colours and sizes. Their flowing arrangement leads towards the altar, while worship, concerts, exhibitions, choirs and youth groups share the space.
A crystal baptismal font from Kosta catches and fractures the light like still water. Glass, stone, ceramics and crystal connect the building with trees, community and daylight. Stand near the benches and watch brightness move across the tiled floor like leaves.
