Moderna Museet

Moderna Museet is a contemporary art museum in Sweden, housed in a former electricity plant with an unmistakable industrial frame. Brick, steel and glass shape its view from the approach. Daylight travels through the bright addition and reaches deep into galleries built for changing art. Those galleries feel open, experimental and slightly raw.

The building began as an electricity plant in 1900, then Tham & Videgård reshaped its structure into a museum completed in 2009. The conversion leaves its industrial skeleton legible. Its programme moves between intimate portraits and installations that resist familiar landscapes. Large tapestries, precise drawings, glass works and installations make light, space and sound part of the galleries. Guided tours and lectures add context to the exhibitions. Children can join drop-in workshops, while family events keep the museum active beyond the exhibition rooms. Look closely at the bricks: sunlight gathers across their uneven surfaces, quietly joining the old plant to contemporary art.
