Liggende pige

Liggende pige is a reclining sculpture by Gerhard Henning, set low on the grass beside a canal in Slottsparken, Sweden. A torso rests against the ground, one arm tucked close and the legs extending in relaxed repose. The slight head tilt and carefully placed hands give the quiet pose a deliberate rhythm. Trees frame the low horizon, while water brings a bright edge to the park.

Archival photographs from 1963 to 1966 show the same silhouette beside the canal, with the terrace and castle gardens behind it. People pause nearby to read, sketch, or sit on a bench as children circle and dogs investigate before moving on. Morning light sharpens the contours, grey weather softens them, and rain leaves small beads across the surface. From the canal, the figure appears twice, once in the grass and once in its reflection.
