Palacio de Villalcázar

Palacio de Villalcázar stands in Málaga’s historic centre, a stone merchant house shaped by the city’s eighteenth-century port trade. Its continuous balcony runs beneath a lookout tower. Geometric painting remnants remain on the facade, while marble columns mark the courtyard inside. That courtyard forms the building’s central space. Its name honours José María Echevarri y Chacón, eighth Count of Villalcázar de Sirga and third Count of Buenavista.

The complex began in the late seventeenth century, when a Genoese merchant and first Count of Buenavista bought its initial houses. The first Counts of Buenavista made this residence their home. Later modifications changed the residential structure, and plans propose coworking spaces within selected areas. Those plans place digital work areas in underused ground-floor and mezzanine sections. They also include accessibility and fire-safety improvements. The building holds Bien de Interés Cultural recognition for its cultural significance. The proposed work would restore the zaguan, reconnecting the courtyard with the street.
