Mercado de Atarazanas
Mercado de Atarazanas brings Málaga’s food culture into a historic market beside the Costa del Sol. Stalls fill the building with meat, sausages, cheeses, fish, seafood, seasonal fruit, spices, pickles, and fresh bread. Bars and restaurants add Málaga dishes when you prefer a prepared meal, while the lively morning trade gives the interior its energy.
Joaquín de Rucoba designed the present building between 1876 and 1879 on the site of a Nasrid shipyard from the era of Mohammed V. The main façade preserves its original arch, a monument to the site’s history, while ironwork inspired by Paris’s Les Halles frames the market. A stained-glass window adds colour above the trading floor.
The Arabic word for shipyard survives in Atarazanas, linking today’s food stalls with Málaga’s maritime past. Wheelchair access makes the market easier to explore.
