Schillerplatz

Schillerplatz occupies a central position in Mainz, connecting the city’s green space with a long urban history. Roman Mogontiacum included this area within its inner city. During the Middle Ages, Schillerplatz served as Dietmarkt, hosting markets for fruit, grain and livestock. Older records call it forum gentile or forum gentilium. The square is framed by noble courts whose Baroque and Rococo architecture gives its surroundings a historical character. The Fastnachtsbrunnen marks Schillerplatz’s strong connection with Mainz Carnival. Its name changed in the eighteenth century, when Thiermarkt reflected the square’s role in livestock trading. In 1862, it became Schillerplatz after a monument honoured Friedrich Schiller. The plaza also bears traces of Mainz’s turbulent history, including battles during the conquest of 1462 and the First Coalition War. Green space and retail shops place Schillerplatz within Mainz’s cultural and social life. Small monuments reinforce its carnival identity, while Johannisnacht gives the square another festival connection.
