Neuer Brunnen
Neuer Brunnen stands on Neubrunnplatz in Mainz, beside the Grosse Bleiche thoroughfare. This Baroque fountain rises in red sandstone, with a twelve-metre obelisk above a three-step pedestal.
Johann Weydt designed the structure between 1724 and 1726 under Elector Lothar Franz von Schönborn. Bas-reliefs cover the obelisk with scenes of war, the arts, good governance and trade, while four sculptures gather around its base. Two figures represent the Rhine and Main, and Joseph Scholl carved the two lions. Franz Matthias Hiernle created the original river figures in 1726, but copies replaced them in 1877 while the originals moved to Landesmuseum Mainz.
The fountain once formed part of a representative square beside the former university bursary and Wolf Metternich’s court. War damage destroyed that surrounding ensemble, while restoration work in 1828, 1877 and 2002 preserved the monument. Two pedestal steps were reconstructed in 1986.
