Neue Golden-Ross-Kaserne
The Neue Golden-Ross-Kaserne stands in Mainz’s Hartenberg-Münchfeld district as a former barracks with its architectural form preserved. Its military history began with the Prussian Army.
It formed part of new barracks around the Rheingauwall, a neo-Prussian fortification surrounding Mainz’s Neustadt area. Fort Hartenberg belonged to that defensive setting.
The site housed the Magdeburg Dragoon Regiment Number Six and served the twenty-first Division of the Prussian Army. The barracks lost their military use after World War One.
The main building presents a large, symmetrical, unplastered yellow-brick façade in a simple Neo-Renaissance style. Unplastered yellow brick defines the main building.
A six-axis central risalit anchors the façade, while four-storey side wings carry projecting corner oriels. The main building is now a protected monument.
The former barracks form a mixed-use area whose main building accommodates the Co-Office coworking space. Shared kitchens and meeting rooms support its users.
Businesses ranging from start-ups to established companies occupy the wider site, linking preserved architecture with contemporary work. Mainz retains this military landmark within its urban landscape.
