Mahnmal der Deutschen Einheit
Mahnmal der Deutschen Einheit stands in Mainz as a memorial to Germany’s division and reunification. You see a rectangular concrete block, 3.44 metres high, split into three sections. Its central inscription reads “Deutschland ist unteilbar”, meaning “Germany is indivisible”.
Mainz’s CDU council faction initiated the project in 1959, and architect Albert Karl Spelthahn designed it. Paul Sauer crafted the structure, which opened on 16 June 1961 to mark the 1953 uprising in East Germany. Names of cities now located in Poland and Russia cover the memorial, reflecting changed borders and sparking later criticism.
An information stele adds context to the memorial’s purpose. Its concrete form leaves one clear image: a single block visibly divided into three parts.
