Lutherkirche

Lutherkirche stands in Mainz’s Oberstadt, beside the citadel and directly above the ancient Roman theater. Both neighbouring landmarks have protected historical status.

The Lutheran congregation began in November 1930 without a building of its own. Worship took place in halls across the Oberstadt. After the Second World War destroyed Mainz’s three Protestant churches, a dedicated building became necessary. Completed in 1949, this church became Mainz’s first postwar church.

The Evangelical Church in Germany’s emergency church programme supported construction, while congregation members took an active role. Architect Otto Bartning designed a building that fits carefully into Mainz’s cityscape. Its position leaves one striking image: a postwar church standing above a Roman theater, beside a historic citadel.
