Eisenturm

Eisenturm stands in Mainz, Germany, as a medieval tower from the early thirteenth century. Its masonry marks a former watchtower and city gate beside the Rhine’s medieval trading centre. The Wood Tower and Alexander Tower complete Mainz’s three surviving wall towers.

Built for defence, the tower was altered in the fifteenth century and later served as a gaol. Nearby, the Eisenmarkt supported trade until the nineteenth century. That commercial setting connected the gate with busy riverside life during the Middle Ages.

An air raid in February 1945 destroyed its roof and interior, leaving severe wartime damage. Reconstruction in the 1960s added a slate-covered hipped roof. Art exhibitions take place inside through Kunstverein Eisenturm Mainz, giving the old gate a cultural role.
