Christuskirche

Christuskirche is a Protestant church in Mainz with a prominent dome and Renaissance Revival design. Architect Eduard Kreyßig designed the church in Mainz. Its cross-shaped plan and high tambour dome give the building a strong presence in the cityscape. The dome recalls Saint Peter’s Basilica in Rome.

Construction spanned the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Bombing caused major damage during World War II. Reconstruction in the early 1950s restored a church linked closely with Mainz’s Protestant community. The building belongs to the Protestant Church in Hesse and Nassau. Music also shapes Christuskirche, where Diethard Hellmann founded the Bach Choir and Bach Orchestra. Their musical work includes performances of Bach’s cantatas. The church also hosts gospel performances and opening services for the University of Mainz’s academic term. Visitors can find wheelchair access at the Christuskirche in Mainz.
