Bastion Alexander
Bastion Alexander is a historic fortification in Mainz, named after Pope Alexander VII. The construction took place between 1668 and 1673. It formed part of Mainz's defensive system and stood at the northern end of the Kästrich. The site controlled approaches to the Rhine Valley. The bastion belonged to a star-shaped belt of sixteen fortifications around Mainz, designed by Johann Baptist von der Driesch. Several nearby roads converged towards the Rhine Valley. In 1913, an ensemble of villas appeared on the bastion, including the Jugendstil villa Liebe Erde. Architect Albin Müller designed the Jugendstil villa Liebe Erde. The villas belong to the Denkmalzone Auf der Bastei, connecting residential architecture with the fortification. The Villa Musica foundation has its home at the site. The foundation promotes young musicians, adding a musical presence to this protected historic monument. The Mainz Citadel extends the city's fortress history. Its recorded experiences include underground passages, concerts, and festivals, placing Bastion Alexander within a wider military landscape.
