St. Franziskus
St. Franziskus is a Roman Catholic parish church in Neue Heimat, a district of Linz, Upper Austria. Its modern architecture serves a neighbourhood that expanded around the postwar Zöhrdorferfeld development. The church belongs to the Linz-South deanery within the Diocese of Linz.
The parish first used an Austrian Federal Railways barrack and Volksschule 35 for worship and pastoral work. Hans Riener designed the parish centre, built between 1972 and 1975, before financial difficulties delayed the church. Hans Riener and Franz Josef Kranl then designed the church, constructed between 1984 and 1985. Bishop Maximilian Aichern consecrated it on 5 October 1985, while the organ followed in 1988. A church tower added in 2008 completed the complex in another visible stage.
The parish centre brings together worship, children’s activities, youth outings, senior gatherings and regular parish breakfasts. A Caritas kindergarten and an open singing group add education and music to community life. Thirteen parishes connect this congregation with a wider network across southern Linz. Look for the tower, whose later addition marks the building’s gradual development across three decades.
