Schloss
Schloss in Linz stands on the Schlossberg beside the Danube, within the city’s historic old town. The castle combines stone fortification walls with a steel-and-glass southern wing. From the hill, you can look across Linz and the river while seeing the site’s layered architecture.
A document from 799 links the fortress to the age of Charlemagne and the nearby Martinskirche. Parts of those early walls remain visible. Major construction under Rudolf II during the seventeenth century shaped much of the surviving structure. A city fire destroyed the southern wing in 1800, leaving its ruins until reconstruction in 2009.
The Schlossmuseum Linz fills the different wings with archaeology, art, natural history, technology, and regional collections. Permanent exhibitions in the southern wing explore Upper Austria’s nature and scientific achievements. A restaurant and café add a place to pause beside the panoramic view.
