Schloss Ebelsberg

Schloss Ebelsberg is a former fortified castle in Ebelsberg, a district of Linz, Austria. Its first recorded mention dates from the mid-twelfth century. Its position near the Danube and Traun rivers offered a defensive outlook across the surrounding flat land. Passau’s bishops held the castle for about six centuries. The castle served as a winter and summer residence while repeated disputes changed control among bishops and noble families. Several armed conflicts damaged the castle structure over time. The Battle of Ebelsberg brought Austrian and French troops to the castle during the Napoleonic Wars. A fire left it standing as a ruin. Later ownership passed to Baron Karl Theodor von Kast, whose family retained the castle until 1974. The central courtyard has a nearly trapezoidal shape. Two floors, three towers, and two gates define the architectural arrangement. The Linzer Tor faces the nearby marketplace. The Ennsertor connects the castle with a chestnut-lined avenue through the nineteenth-century park. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart attended an opera performance here. The site serves larger cultural events, including concerts and Christmas markets. Community gatherings continue within the historic castle complex.
