Madonnenstatue
Madonnenstatue stands in Linz, Austria, as a public sculpture of the Virgin Mary. Gustav Muher completed it in 1926, giving the city a Marian work of art. The sculpture is also known as “Maria auf der Stange,” a detail that distinguishes this depiction. Muher was born in Budapest in 1861 and later lived and worked in Linz. He died there in 1951, after contributing monuments, decorative facades and religious works across the city and region.
Its presence connects public art with Catholic traditions that have shaped Austrian community life. Children’s May devotions have brought families here for prayers, songs and stories about Mary. The surrounding setting also places the sculpture within Linz’s wider landscape of religious and civic monuments. Muher often combined traditional forms with historicist and neobaroque elements in his work. One concrete image remains: a Marian figure completed in 1926, standing within everyday city life.
