Kriegerdenkmal

Kriegerdenkmal stands within Barbarafriedhof cemetery in Linz, surrounding a rectangular green space with stone forms extending inward. Granite and engraved sarcophagi give the grounds a solemn, ordered appearance. At the southern end, a central granite cube rises beside upright steles dedicated to army units.

Artist Carl Berger designed the memorial for people who died during the First World War. Construction took place from 1922 to 1925, supported by the Upper Austrian War Graves Protection Association, Schwarzes Kreuz. The arrangement groups engraved names by military unit, connecting individual losses with the region’s wartime history.

You can walk between the sarcophagi and read the names carved into their stone surfaces. The inscription on the cube’s rear records the association’s role in creating the memorial.
