Heiliger Geist

Heiliger Geist is a Roman Catholic parish church in Linz’s Dornach-Auhof district, surrounded by gardens and residential buildings. Its exposed-concrete structure, designed by Erich Scheichl and Franz Treml, dates from 1966 to 1967. Construction began in March 1966, and Auxiliary Bishop Alois Wagner consecrated the church in November 1971. A slightly raised flat roof carries a cross above two portals facing the forecourt.

A freestanding bell carrier stands outside without rising above the roofline. Inside, four slender columns form a cross around the square central space, while a lower weekday chapel occupies the north side. A covered walkway connects the church with the parish hall and kindergarten. Jakob Kopp created the altar, tabernacle, baptismal font and holy water basin as a unified group. The interior also brings together a late Gothic Madonna and Child, a sixteenth-century Risen Christ and a nineteenth-century crucifix.

Fritz Riedl’s wall tapestries date from 1968, and Fritz Schild built the organ between 1984 and 1988. The church serves worship, community life and social initiatives, including Climate Alliance participation and parish flea markets. Green-painted door wings and window bands provide the only strong colour against the grey concrete exterior.
