Evolution
Evolution stands in Forum Metall, an open-air sculpture park east of the Lentos Kunstmuseum beside the Danube in Linz. Helmuth Gsöllpointner’s 1979 work unfolds a cubic form into a geometric structure that changes as you move around it. Five-millimetre hollow chromnickel steel gives the construction a clear industrial character, linking its material to Linz’s industrial history.
The sculpture belongs to Gsöllpointner’s series Variable Objects, which begins with simple geometric forms and opens them into space. Its original setting was different: a water basin and small bridge marked the entrance to an underground Oberbank garage. In 2009, it moved into Forum Metall, where Austrian and international modern sculpture connects art, industry and public space.
The work still carries that practical past within its striking shape. You can picture people once walking through or beside the steel structure while entering the garage.
