Adalbert Stifter
The Adalbert Stifter monument stands in Linz as a bronze work by the sculptor Hans Rathausky. Rathausky completed this bronze statue in Linz in 1902.
It presents the Austrian writer and painter Adalbert Stifter, whose work belongs to nineteenth-century Austrian literature. Stifter also created detailed landscape paintings across his artistic career.
The life-sized figure sits on granite brought from the Bohemian Forest, linking the monument with Stifter’s origins and subjects. The figure’s right hand rests quietly in his lap.
His left arm leans against the rock, while his coat and hat lie beside him. An inscription plaque carries his name and life years.
Stifter’s writing is known for precise nature descriptions and ideals of simplicity, harmony, and self-control. His books include Bunte Steine, Der Nachsommer, and Witiko.
The monument occupies a quieter promenade rather than the originally proposed Danube embankment. Its setting connects Linz with Stifter’s literary and artistic legacy.
