Rathausbrunnen
Rathausbrunnen stands near Leipzig’s New Town Hall, where shell limestone and bronze bring public art into the civic centre. Georg Wrba created the fountain for the building’s consecration on 7 October 1905.
Its materials reflect Leipzig’s long fountain tradition, which once served everyday water needs before modern waterworks reduced that practical role. From the 15th century, stonework, metalwork and mechanical pumps called Wasserkünste helped turn water points into features of markets, streets and public squares. By the late 19th and early 20th centuries, fountains increasingly marked the city’s history and enhanced its urban spaces.
The bronze casting allowed detailed sculptural work, while the shell limestone gives the monument a durable stone presence. Nearby civic life connects this work directly with Leipzig’s administration and its continuing care for public art.
