El Obelisco
El Obelisco rises in the Plaza de la Constitución as a narrow, lance-like column of dark volcanic stone. Its rough surface shows pores, crystalline cavities, and seams beneath the open sky.
Municipal architect Joan Margarit i Serradell built the shaft in the mid-1950s using lava quarried in La Isleta. The city inaugurated the monument on 18 July 1957, without a pedestal or inscription. During the democratic era, the structure became the Monument to the Constitution of 1978 and gained a plaque bearing its preamble. Its inauguration date also carries difficult historical associations for many people.
Across the small square dedicated to poet Tomás Morales, a statue by Victorio Macho faces the volcanic column. As you move around it, the lava catches light across every cavity and seam.

The myTuur app is free, and once you are standing at a spot its story starts by itself.
Spots like this one are the stops myTuur strings into tours through Las Palmas. In the app, each story begins where you stand: walk up to a spot and it starts, read it on screen or listen as you go, then follow the route to the next one.
