Zwingerturm

Zwingerturm forms part of the historic fortifications surrounding the old town of Landsberg am Lech. Its medieval walls reach eight metres in places.

The wall developed through three main building phases between the thirteenth and sixteenth centuries. Five main gates and numerous towers once shaped the city’s defensive perimeter.

Zwingerturm belongs to the surviving towers along the path beside the old wall. The fortifications protected residents and included bastions, lookout positions, and strongholds.

Its name refers to a Zwinger, the buffer area between two defensive walls. That protected space made attacks more difficult for advancing forces.

A shaded route from Bayertor passes bastions and Zwingerturm while following the wall northwards. Bayertor dates from the early fifteenth century.

The route shows how the wall follows the hill’s contours and places towers at strategic points. Each tower has its own form and style, reflecting different building and alteration periods.

Landsberg grew beside the Lech and prospered through trade, especially salt, from the fourteenth to nineteenth centuries. That prosperity helped the city build and maintain substantial fortifications.

Zwingerturm preserves a visible part of Landsberg’s layered medieval military architecture. Its surviving masonry connects the city’s landscape with centuries of defensive planning.
