St. Leonhard
St. Leonhard stands in Billenhausen, a district of Krumbach in Germany, as a Catholic parish church. Its exterior retains a village church character.
The building began in the fifteenth century with Gothic forms and gained Baroque interior features later. Its tower dates from 1474 and rises above the church. Arch friezes, a saddle roof, pinnacles, and dormers shape the tower’s visible profile. A porch extension and a new sacristy mark later changes.
Inside, late Baroque paintings by Jakob Fröschle date from 1781 and were restored in 1918. The high altar dates from 1783 to 1784. Franz Xaver Stähle created it with an early Classicist design and a scene of intercession. It shows St. Leonhard before the Virgin Mary.
Late Gothic wooden figures connect the church with the former village church. They include Saints Gordian and Epimachus, a Madonna with Child, and an Anna selbdritt sculpture. The former parish church was demolished in 1807, after which St. Leonhard became the parish church. Its position on Billenhausen’s northern edge reflects that history.
