Topfhaus
Topfhaus stands in Kiel’s Old Botanical Garden, surrounded by exotic trees and a fountain. This brick building formed part of a university greenhouse complex built between 1884 and 1885. It stretches 31 metres long and five metres wide, with its former glass extensions now gone.
The surviving core once held gardeners’ and the heater’s quarters, potting rooms, and a full basement. Restoration repaired the brick walls, replaced the roof, and reconstructed the chimney. Today, a 40-square-metre hall hosts lectures and events beside a high potting room with gallery. A small gardeners’ room, kitchen, offices, and refurbished basement complete the restored interior. A lift and stair lift provide barrier-free access throughout the building.
Receptions, weddings, and exhibitions bring cultural life into this former working building. The chimney now rises above the brick structure as a visible reminder of its greenhouse past.
