Rathausturm

Rathausturm rises 106 metres above Kiel, forming the tallest part of the city’s historic Rathaus. Its nearly square base stands between two courtyards, with unplastered brick wings and lighter stone surrounding it.

Hermann Billing designed the Rathaus, built between 1907 and 1911 as a protected historic monument. The tower takes inspiration from Venice’s Campanile, yet stands more than seven metres higher. Inside, a circular entrance hall leads towards upper floors arranged around a central gallery. An elevator reaches a viewing platform 67 metres above the ground, with panoramic views across Kiel’s city centre, harbour and surrounding landscape.

A carillon plays Heinrich Johannsen’s melody every quarter hour, recalling the Westminster chimes and London’s Big Ben. Falcon nesting boxes shelter kestrels and peregrine falcons, which have raised chicks there. Guided tours reveal the architecture and history, while the tower’s 14-metre-wide base anchors this distinctive Kiel landmark.
