Licht wird Objekt
Licht wird Objekt stands in Kiel’s Damperhof district as a stainless steel sculpture by Hermann Göpfert and Johannes Peter Hölzinger. Created in 1971, the artwork was commissioned by Sparkasse Kiel to commemorate the 1972 Olympic Games. Its polished metal catches the surroundings, while three rising spirals give the structure a sense of motion.
The central spiral reaches approximately eight metres and carries vertical slats that shift with the wind. You can move from the outside towards the centre, where tall, gleaming walls surround you. As your position changes, reflections and spatial impressions shift, until the centre creates distance from the world beyond. Listed as cultural heritage, this work brings together light, movement, reflection and post-war kinetic art.
