Leopoldstein
Leopoldstein is a wheelchair-accessible historical memorial in Heidelberg’s city forest, built to honour Grand Duke Leopold of Baden. Its Buntsandstein surface carries a ducal hat and sweeping letter L.
The monument stands at the Alte Kohlplatte, where a star-shaped crossroads joins forest paths near the House of Astronomy. A shelter hut and benches mark the place as a forest resting point.
Historical waymarker stones preserve an older navigation tradition, while the Königstuhl walking route passes directly beside the memorial. The nearby paths connect the monument with Heidelberg’s wooded slopes.
The city placed Leopoldstein in memory of Leopold, whose rule and visit linked Heidelberg’s civic history with this forest landscape. A truck later broke the original stone, leaving its engraved upper section on a pedestal.
Local Buntsandstein, the carved insignia, and the restored upper section give the memorial a distinct material and historical presence. A partially open hut shelters walkers beside the stone.
Its crossroads setting brings together forest routes, historical markers, seating, and a monument connected with Baden’s nineteenth-century history. Leopoldstein joins Heidelberg’s natural landscape with a visible record of local heritage.
