Karlsplatz
Karlsplatz stands at the foot of Heidelberg Castle, linking old-town history with everyday city life. Grand Duke Karl Friedrich of Baden gave the square its name. Franciscan buildings once occupied this unusually spacious site before Karlsplatz took shape in 1805. The Franciscans settled on this site in 1320. At the centre, the Sebastian Münster Fountain recalls a cosmographer, humanist, and teacher. Michael Schoenholtz created the fountain in 1978. Münster taught Hebrew and studied astronomy and mathematics here from 1521 to 1529. The Heidelberg Academy of Sciences borders the square. Palais Boisserée, Roßhirt House, and Mittermaierhaus add historic architecture around the open space. Two nearby student pubs represent Heidelberg’s long student tradition. Zum Seppl and Zum Roten Ochsen stand along the main street beside Karlsplatz. The castle view opens across the square. Students and tourists gather among historic buildings, the fountain, and the open urban space. Karlsplatz brings medieval, scholarly, and student histories into one Heidelberg setting.
